Broadcom LSI CVPM02 05-50038-00 Cachevault Power Module Raid Battery Kit

Broadcom LSI CVPM02 05-50038-00 Cachevault Power Module Raid Battery Kit

RAID controller cards temporarily cache data from the host system until it is successfully written to the storage media. While cached, data can be lost if system power fails, jeopardizing the data’s permanent integrity.

RAID caching is a cost-effective way to improve I/O performance by writing data to a controller’s cache before it is written to disk. However, in the event of a power or server failure, the writes in cache may be lost.

CacheVault® flash cache protection modules and battery backup units (BBUs) protect the integrity of cached data by storing cached data in non-volatile flash cache storage or by providing battery power to the controller.

CacheVault technology prevents data loss by powering critical components of the card long enough to automatically transfer the cached data to NAND flash. Once power returns, the data is restored to the cache and normal operation resumes. By using a super-capacitor instead of Lithium-ION batteries, CacheVault technology virtually eliminates hardware maintenance costs associated with batteries, lowers total cost of ownership over the life of the controller card and provide more environmentally friendly cache protection, all while maintaining optimal RAID performance.

Features

  • Lower total cost of ownership (TCO) with CacheVault technology by reducing hardware maintenance and disposal issues associated with lithium-ion batteries
  • Battery backup units allow for higher ambient temperatures
  • Provides additional peace of mind for all MegaRAID® controller cards
  • Enjoy configuration flexibility with many chassis mounting options
  • Receive longer life cache protection

Does the job, took a bit to show ready

I put this in a home lab server because I wanted write-back cache without the constant risk warnings. Install is basically plug in the module, mount it, boot and check the RAID BIOS/StorCLI. It didn’t instantly show as ready, which had me second guessing myself, but after some time charging it reported OK. Performance feels a bit snappier on writes now. Price stings a little for such a small part, but that’s server hardware I guess.

The CVPM02 module does its job and protects cached data during power loss. Installation was not very smooth — the clip and cabling require careful handling to fit properly. Once installed, it worked with my LSI MegaRAID controller as expected, but setup took longer than I hoped.

Cleared the CacheVault fault

Bought for a MegaRAID setup at work. The CVPM02 was detected and cleared the battery/cachevault fault we had been seeing. Quality looks normal for Broadcom LSI parts, nothing fancy. Only minor complaint is there weren’t much instructions included, so you need to already know your controller compatibility or look it up. Once installed, no issues during daily use.

Good module, tight fit in small case

The module itself seems legit and works with my Broadcom/LSI controller, but the cable was a little stiff and awkward in my 2U chassis. Not a huge deal, just made cable routing annoying. First boot showed it charging, then it went optimal later. So overall good, just make sure you have room to mount it properly.

Fixed my RAID warning

Needed a replacement CVPM02 for a RAID controller that kept warning about cache protection. This kit fixed it. Packaging was plain but fine, part number matched 05-50038-00, and MegaRAID Storage Manager showed it as good once installed. Would buy again if I have another server needing one.

Q
Will the Broadcom LSI CVPM02 05-50038-00 work with my MegaRAID controller card?
A
The Broadcom LSI CVPM02 CacheVault Power Module is designed for Broadcom/LSI MegaRAID controller cards that support CacheVault technology. To confirm fit, check your RAID controller model and supported accessory list against Broadcom documentation before ordering.
More
Q
How difficult is it to install the CVPM02 CacheVault power module?
A
Installation is usually straightforward for IT professionals or experienced server technicians. The CVPM02 connects to a compatible RAID controller and may require chassis mounting space for the module, so it’s best to verify your server layout and controller manual first.
More
Q
What is the difference between the CVPM02 CacheVault module and a standard RAID battery backup unit?
A
Unlike traditional lithium-ion RAID battery backup units, the CVPM02 uses super-capacitor based CacheVault technology. This helps protect cached RAID data during power loss, reduces maintenance, supports longer service life, and lowers disposal concerns over time.
More
Q
What does the CVPM02 CacheVault Power Module actually do?
A
The Broadcom LSI CVPM02 is built for enterprise RAID cache protection and helps preserve cached write data by powering the controller long enough to move data into non-volatile NAND flash. This improves data integrity and is designed for reliable long-term server storage use.
More
Q
Does the CVPM02 require maintenance or replacement like a normal RAID battery?
A
CacheVault modules generally require less maintenance than older RAID battery kits because they use a super-capacitor instead of lithium-ion batteries. For best results, keep the module in a properly ventilated server environment and periodically inspect controller alerts for any cache protection warnings.
