RAID controller cards temporarily cache data from the host system until it is successfully written to the storage media. While cached, data can be lost if system power fails, jeopardizing the data’s permanent integrity.

RAID caching is a cost-effective way to improve I/O performance by writing data to a controller’s cache before it is written to disk. However, in the event of a power or server failure, the writes in cache may be lost.

CacheVault® flash cache protection modules and battery backup units (BBUs) protect the integrity of cached data by storing cached data in non-volatile flash cache storage or by providing battery power to the controller.

CacheVault technology prevents data loss by powering critical components of the card long enough to automatically transfer the cached data to NAND flash. Once power returns, the data is restored to the cache and normal operation resumes. Does the job, took a bit to show ready I put this in a home lab server because I wanted write-back cache without the constant risk warnings. Install is basically plug in the module, mount it, boot and check the RAID BIOS/StorCLI. It didn’t instantly show as ready, which had me second guessing myself, but after some time charging it reported OK. Performance feels a bit snappier on writes now. Price stings a little for such a small part, but that’s server hardware I guess. 5

The CVPM02 module does its job and protects cached data during power loss. Installation was not very smooth — the clip and cabling require careful handling to fit properly. Once installed, it worked with my LSI MegaRAID controller as expected, but setup took longer than I hoped. 5

Cleared the CacheVault fault Bought for a MegaRAID setup at work. The CVPM02 was detected and cleared the battery/cachevault fault we had been seeing. Quality looks normal for Broadcom LSI parts, nothing fancy. Only minor complaint is there weren’t much instructions included, so you need to already know your controller compatibility or look it up. Once installed, no issues during daily use. 5

Good module, tight fit in small case The module itself seems legit and works with my Broadcom/LSI controller, but the cable was a little stiff and awkward in my 2U chassis. Not a huge deal, just made cable routing annoying. First boot showed it charging, then it went optimal later. So overall good, just make sure you have room to mount it properly. 5

Fixed my RAID warning Needed a replacement CVPM02 for a RAID controller that kept warning about cache protection. This kit fixed it.
